Cleaner Kopaonik Thanks to Waste Water Treatment Facility and Collectors

29 November 2013, Raška

The conceptual design of the Kopaonik Tourist Centre waste water collectors and treatment facility, together with the feasibility study and environmental impact assessment, were handed over to the Raška Municipality today. This document was prepared with the financial support of the European Union and the Swiss Government through the European Partnership with Municipalities Programme EU PROGRES.

The conceptual design provides for the construction of a collector line that will collect the waste water from the Tourist Centre to the Rudnica settlement and of the waste water treatment facility. The Raška Municipality has thus been provided with the proper technical starting point for the development of the main design and for applying for the requisite licences and construction funds.

“This project demonstrates the commitment of the local self-government leadership and citizens to live and work in an ecologically healthy environment and responsible society, hand in hand with our friends in the European Union and Switzerland. The project also puts in place the prerequisites for raising the quality of tourist services to the maximum level, whilst ensuring that none of the activities endanger the environment,” Raška Mayor Jovan Čorbić said.

The Raška Municipality, which the Kopaonik National Park is situated in, is to improve the treatment of waste water in this area. The local self-government has been trying to address this problem for years, but the collection and treatment of waste water have not been resolved systemically yet. The development and upgrading of the utility infrastructure on this mountain will contribute to the sustainable development of the Tourist Centre, particularly with respect to environmental protection.

The European Union and Swiss Government funded the development of this design with 115,000 EUR through EU PROGRES.
