Works on the Flood Protection on the River Raška Started

19 July 2013, Raška

The first works on the project for flood protection on the River Raška, funded by the European Union and the Government of Switzerland through European Partnership with Municipalities Programme EU PROGRES with around a total of 400,000 EUR, started today with the reconstruction of the damn on Trnavska River in the Municipality of Raška. The project will include the reconstruction of the damn on the Trnavska River in Raška and the construction of five small damns on tributaries in Novi Pazar, where works will begin next week.

Because of poorly regulated river beds of all river Raška tributaries, there are major floods each year in the City of Novi Pazar and Municipality of Raška, mostly in spring due to heavy rainfall. This is when the water from the River Raška and the tributaries flows out and floods basements and gardens, as well as agricultural land. Material damage caused by floods is extremely high, and this year alone it has been over one million Euros. This project will help the homes that are under direct threat from Raška flooding, but also all 150,500 people living in Raška, Tutin, Sjenica and Novi Pazar.

Through EU PROGRES, 100,000 EUR in funding for the development of technical documentation was secured, which was the basis for the construction works valued at 300,000 EUR.

The completion of construction works is expected by the end of this year. Jaroslav Černi Institute developed the Main Technical Design, and the company Megalit Sumnik was selected as contractor.
