Blace Obtained Its First Tourist Info Centre

13 February 2013, Blace

The first tourist information centre was opened today in the municipality of Blace, within the project “Blace, Plum Festival” that was financially supported by the European Union and the Government of Switzerland through the European Partnership with Municipalities Programme – EU PROGRES. The Info Centre will help visitors to become familiarized in a high quality manner with the tourist offer of this municipality belonging to Toplica District. Blace municipality is the home of the highest number of plum trees per inhabitant in Serbia – two million trees of this fruit’s different varieties are planted on some 5,000 hectares of land. Thus, the “Blace, Plum Festival” project will contribute to branding of this municipality as a plum growing area.

“With this project we wanted to ensure that when someone says Blace, their first thought is the plum, as the most quality fruit in this area and entire Serbia as well,” said Marko Vujačić, Deputy Manager of EU PROGRES. “We realized that this municipality has great potential for fruit growing development, especially since more than two million plum trees are planted here”.

The organization of a four-day cultural and economic event “Plum Days” was supported through the project “Blace - Plum Festival” last August. It was attended by almost 100,000 visitors. During this festival there were more than ten performances by singers of popular and folk music. Over fifty producers and processors of this fruit offered their goods in the street stalls, together with restaurant owners and souvenir sellers. Furthermore, several professional lectures on modern trends in fruit growing were held.

“We have an excellent cooperation with the European Union and the Government of Switzerland both regarding the branding of Blace and many other development projects“, said Radoje Krstović, Mayor of Blace. “It is our goal to present not only our municipality, but the whole Toplica District as a fruit region. Besides fruit growing, this region should also develop rural tourism. Construction of an ethno village would contribute to that.”

The last phase of the project was the establishment of the first tourist info centre in Blace located in the sports, tourism and business centre “Nirvana”. Along with that, promotional tourism brochure “Blace, the Treasure of Unspoiled Glades” was produced, as well as the multimedia DVD with promotional film about Blace.
